I picked up this Springtail Calcium Clay to try breeding my own springtails instead of constantly buying new ones, and honestly, it works really well. I just used it in a catch cup setup and the springtails seem super happy—they’re multiplying like crazy, which is exactly what I wanted.
Normally I know people use little rocks or specific substrates, but I didn’t have any of that on hand. This clay has been a great alternative and way less hassle. Another plus is that you don’t need a ton of it for a colony, so one container goes a long way. I could easily set up several little cultures with just this.
Overall, I’d say it’s definitely a win. Simple, effective, and the springtails are thriving. I think it’s worth the price, especially with the amount you get.

I ordered this springtail clay to make a giant springtail culture for my dart frogs. I took the entire 1 lb bag and dumped it into a pyrex container to create the perfect living environment. The package weighed in at 1lb exactly. The springtails are thriving and duplicating by the dozen. I couldn’t be happier.

My package of clay arrived exploded, leaving me a mess and dirtying the other items it came with. It could have been packaged better, so I’m taking off a star for that. It is a fine powder and quite a pain to clean up.
However, I salvaged what I could and used it… and the product itself seems pretty good! I’ve been wanting to expand with bioactive substrates and this helps me generate more cultures of springtails. It certainly beats buying numerous little cups from pet stores and has helped save a good bit of money. Mixing it is easy enough as well. In my experimental cup, my springtails have been growing and the population is increasing.

This is my first time using calcium bearing clay. We have recently started with isopods and springtails and are alo planning a large hermit crab habitat which will incude some of both isopods and springtails to create a bioactive environment. I would rather grow our current springtail populations for that purpose rather than spend the money on a small container. Frankly, finding them and capturing them in our current isopod habitats is not the easiest, though I know their populations are doing great.
I read up on using calcium bearing clay as a better option for raising springtails. Mix the clay with some water (super easy). Then treat the container like you would any other container with sprintails. Feed them. Keep the environment moist. It is easier to see them roaming the clay then buried in moss and other substrate.
We are still experiementing with this, but it does seem easier. We will be raising population numbers this way before setting up additional habitats.
You receive one pound of clay in this bag. The bag is smaller than you might expect, because the clay does have some weight to it. Price-wise, this generally seems on par with similar products. You can definitely find pricing that is less per pound, but you have to order considerably more to do so. As I just wanted to try this to begin with, it is a good size.
I don’t think I would want to use this in any of our other habitats, but for specifically raising springtails alone, this seems like a good way to do so. You will definitely want to make certain you keep it misted to keep moisture for the springtails.
Overall, this is a great way to raise springtails for other habitats. It works well for that purpose, and you can use the same container of clay to raise many populations.

This is the perfect substrate for starting springtail cultures. The calcium clay is packaged in a resealable bag, which I really like. The instructions for setting up cultures are printed on the bag, and the process is really easy. All that is required is mixing clay and water until it reaches the desired consistency. The mixture then just needs to be spread out in the cup, and it is ready to go. The 1 pound bag is a good size, and it states it can start 6 cultures. However, I found I can stretch the amount out a lot more depending on what I need the springtails for.
I really like this substrate for starting cultures, and it works great. The clay is a lot easier, and a lot cleaner, than using other methods. It is a really simple method, and the springtails seem to do great on the clay. The only minor issue I have is that the bag calls for a 1 to 1 ratio of clay to water. The leaves the clay a little more wet than I would prefer. I think it is easier to adjust if the clay is too dry rather than too wet.
Overall, I am really happy with the clay. It is a great way to culture springtails for bioactive enclosures. It’s also a good value for the amount of cultures it makes.
